This information is reported to our client or the client’s attorney, to help them make a determination if the person’s lifestyle coincides with what they are reporting to the court.
Voluntary Impoverishment
Voluntarily impoverishing is when an person purposely reduced their income, employment, and assets to avoid a financial responsibility. In a family law matter, this may be in an effort to claim they are unable to pay their former spouse alimony, or unable make their child support payments. In either case, we will check whether the person is gainfully employed, working on a full or part-time basis, and employed in a manner equal to their previously known potential. We will also check for signs that the person has moved funds or recently closed bank or investment accounts.
