We are often asked to investigate a client’s former spouse regarding their ability to pay child or spousal support. This can happen when someone stops making their required payments, or when they, themselves, file a motion with the court requesting a modification to an existing spousal support order. Voluntary Impoverishment is when a person intentionally reduces their income and/or redistributes their assets to give the appearance of having less wealth and thereby, the inability to pay support.

We worked on a case several years back where our client’s ex-husband, a very prominent consultant working in the medical profession, was claiming to be out of work and unable to pay his spousal support. Our investigators performed an asset check on the individual, including a nationwide bank and investment account search. These searches revealed that the man had several millions of dollars’ worth of savings and investment accounts in his name.

These searches revealed that the man had several millions of dollars’ worth of savings and investment accounts in his name.

Our investigators also performed surveillance of the man to document his current lifestyle, which included him living in a multi-million-dollar rented home in an exclusive neighborhood; driving several leased luxury automobiles; and taking extended vacations to Europe with his girlfriend.

This information was used in court by our client’s attorney to shed some much-needed light on the man’s actual financial situation.
